wasting time

I think our digital camera has finally died.

It all started last summer when we took it to the beach, and despite being so careful, got sand in it anyway. At the time, it wouldn't work at all, so we rushed it to my dad hoping he could save its life. He completely took it apart, removed buckets of sand, and then put it all back together again. It worked! I had complete faith in him the whole time, he once did the same thing with a car engine (though I'm not sure the problem with that was sand). Anyway, the camera has worked perfectly until now. But for the last week or so its been much slower and noisier about turning on, and then today it wouldn't work at all. So we are going to have to start looking for a new camera. I know I can't go very long without taking pictures of Claire, and I have a feeling there are grandparents who won't be able to go very long without seeing pictures of Claire. Its too bad it stopped working hours before we leave to go camping!

Speaking of camping, its probably pretty obvious by the number of posts I've had today that Nana has come and picked up Claire, I'm all packed, and Mike isn't home yet. The house is so quiet. Its somehow even quieter than when she is napping. Its very strange to be here alone, with nothing to do. What did I do with my time before she was born?

Camping

Mike, Claire and I were invited camping for a few days this week (tomorrow). We decided to leave Claire with Nana and go just the two of us. Its been a while since we've left her overnight, so I hope everything goes well. It will be really fun to get away. But I will miss Claire. Mike and I really need a vacation. But two nights? Thats a long time to be without her! It will be really refreshing to go and not worry about Claire. But I will be thinking about her the whole time anyway.

This is what my brain has been doing since we decided we'd go.

Potty!!

Claire went in her toilet tonight! I know this is bigger news to me than anyone else, but I'm pumped, so everyone will have to read the play-by-play. =)

Claire: Mama poopoo.
Me: Do you have to poop Claire? (poopoo can refer to #1 or #2)
Claire: Yep.
Me: Okay, lets go sit on the toilet.
She runs into the bathroom and sits on her mini-toilet. Nothing happens. Then she looks really alarmed and starts to get up.
Me: Do you have to go potty?
Claire: Yeah (panicking)
Me: Its okay, you can sit down and go potty in the toilet.
Claire: Mama poopoo (points to the big toilet and wants me to sit down too, so I do.)
Then she goes! I cheer for her and she gets really excited, and she wants to go more.

It seems like she thinks the whole thing is pretty cool, which is great. I realize this is but one time that she went on the toilet, and I know that there will be many accidents ahead. But she used to not want anything to do with the whole toilet business, so we've come a long way.

Now I have to go read up on potty training strategies.

An Interesting Idea

To keep noise levels down, a dance club in the UK gives out headphones for people to wear. They can choose between two different DJs and adjust the volume how they like. Can you imagine walking into a club and seeing a bunch of people dancing without music?? Here's the article.

An idea for Jim and Monnie's wedding???

The Halberg Picnic was a good time. A lot of people showed up, and all of us had some great food. We played a little Wiffle Ball, and then Randy broke his leg. Shattered his tibia. After the ambulence left, we figured we better put away the Wiffle Ball and play Croquet instead.

It was really good to see everyone. Seems like everyone s doing well, other than Randy right now. A lot of people are looking forward to August 20. We got our invitation! Yay!

Parade

Yesterday Teresa, Monica, Claire and I went to the Madison Parade of Homes. Its really become a cool tradition that I look forward to. I like to get ideas...and critique expensive houses. Claire did really well too, for being dragged along into lots of houses and then following 'don't touch that' and 'don't go in there' rules. And when we got back, Jimmer helped me make a few slick changes to the blog.

Today is the Halberg Picnic in Ripon. I think its suppose to be a bit cooler than it was yesterday. Its outside at a park, so thats good news.

wider is better

Today I learned that if you live in Manhattan, and you own a townhouse, its probably going to be 18 feet wide (I was reading this article in the New York Times). That seemed really narrow to me, so I got out the tape measure and measured out 18'. It turns out I was right, it really is narrow. And some townhomes are only 9.5 feet wide. I measured that out as well, and that is really narrow. It was very interesting to me. This is something I never even considered, much less the cost of one of these places. It makes me glad I have a backyard!

fun stuff

Claire is becoming her own little person so quickly. Not that thats news or anything, but as she is understanding more and able to communicate better, she gains personality. She will answer questions with either a very enthusiastic "Yeah!" or a quieter "nope." She's even accurate with the answers, usually. If you ask her if she is a fast runner, she'll yell "Yeah!" and take off. She almost always has to have a hat on. And if we are leaving the house, a hat is a must. Her favorite is an orange and green pumpkin hat. If she gets uncomfortable around strangers she pretends she has an 'owie' on her finger. She requests songs. She sings songs. She puts on clothes she finds around the house, comes by me and says "Oooooh wow, mama". This is so I respond "Ooooh wow, Claire!". She loves piggy-back rides. She is so fun.

Mike is going the the cabin with the Portage boys this weekend. The weather looks like it will be cold, but hopefully that will keep the black flies away. I think this is when they are bad. But if I had to choose, I would probably prefer the black flies over the black bears. I don't have to choose though because Claire and I will be in Green Bay. =)

Well, thats about catches you up. It kind of feels like a lot of things are on idle right now.

I saw you do it.

air conditioning

I am SO thankful for the central air unit that was put in our apartment. It was a big hassle back when there were holes being sawed in all the walls, but now, its just great. This is the first time I've lived in a place with central air. Now I'm spoiled.

stuff we've been up to

Last weekend Claire, Teresa and I went to Ironwood to visit with Uncle Matt. Aunt Martha was there as well and it was really nice to see them. It sounds like a lot of people are going to be at Jim and Monnie's wedding, and its going to be great time.

Then there was a week of hot weather. I turned on the central air. Yay!! It is so nice!

Now for this weekend, we don't have much in the way of plans. Yesterday afternoon Claire and I went over the the Kinsellas to run through the sprinkler while Mike went and played tennis. Elissa's thermometer said it was 97, and it was actually in the shade. It may not really have been 97, but it was definitely hot. Claire was a bit skeptical of the sprinkler at first, but since Jalyn was in the water getting wet, it must not be all that bad and Claire finally joined her. I was able to get some great pictures (see above). Its so much fun that they can play together more and more now.

I'm not sure whats up for the rest of the day. Mike is at some kind of med school meeting this morning. I would be completely happy laying around in the central air. Maybe we have a movie to watch. We are doing the Blockbuster movies in the mail deal. Mike found out if you sign up for Netflix, cancel it, and then send the email notice of cancellation to Blockbuster they will give you any DVD you want, plus two months of free membership. So we did. And for as much as I dislike Blockbuster, they are actually much faster at getting you movies than Netflix is. Its nice to have a new movie here all the time.
