Time

My computer is, I believe, permanently out of service. In short, the power cord melted itself and in the process I think something inside the computer was damaged as well, since my back up power cord won't work anymore. Initially, this was really bad news. I really liked my computer. It was always incredibly reliable and problem-free. But, it is about five years old, and lets be serious, thats up there as far as a computer's life expectancy goes. And I'd be lying if I said it didn't have its little quirks. So, yes, I really liked my old reliable computer and it stinks that I can't use it (now Mike and I have to share), but I can see this situation for what it really is, a chance to upgrade! I have my eye on an an iMac, and hopefully after a bit of money saving, I'll get to 'switch'.

You'll really like the mac (if you end up getting on) - not going laptop though?

The problem with the macbook is that it costs tons of $$$ for a big enough screen.

A chance to upgrade is full of possibilities. For example, when my cellphone dies...I may need to get an iphone...

Luckily for you Sheila, the Labor Day sales are coming up. Buying things on credit and avoiding saving at all costs is the American way. You don't want to be labeled a red, do you? Mike?

ahhhhhh... we have a macbook. in it's box. in the dining room. Maeve's. was only used for six weeks last fall in Maeve's dorm room. then.... "it just broke, Mom". the apple store says a liquid was spilled on it. estimate to fix the 6 week old, cute-as-heck laptop? $700+. uh huh. after we had just paid $1,250 for it.

we have a macbook....

Yeah, we want a bigger screen than 13 inches. And honestly, I'd been using my laptop in a desktop-erly way since it always had to be plugged in.

Labor Day sales, I didn't even consider that. They'd have to be some pretty good sales though, since just started the computer fund. And what is this credit you speak of?

Carrie, I think I'd actually be impressed it made it six weeks in a freshman's college dorm room!

I am typing happily away on an iMac. :)

One question...how does the power cord melt itself? I gotta know!

Well, basically the wires at the end that plugs into the computer broke apart. Every so often, the computer would be plugged in but it would switch to battery power. I was always able to fix it by unplugging it or straighting it out or whatever, but then one day, it just started 'emitting' sparks from holes that were melted in the black part of the cord. And it was really hot as well. I burned my hand in a few places trying to get it unplugged. Once it was unplugged the cord was smoking and smoke was also coming out of the computer where the cord was plugged into.

Thats the long version, Alle!
